My thought excatly. There was certainly some fun going on, but the whole

cold war reaching it crescendo was an ever present grey cloud over the decade.

I remember being a teenager and having legit conversations with friends at the time re. what our plans were should (a) the Soviets invade the US (a la Red Dawn), and (b) how would we make sure we were either really far away from a nuclear missile target (so we could survive) or at ground zero (so we would be vaporized instantly).

Those are some pretty dark conversations to be having as a teenager.
