Re: It's all about the $$$...if our deal is competitive with the B1G/SEC
Its not going to be initially. This is not going to rival a network that has had distribution and been in existence for 10 years (BTN), nor is it going to be the great rollout we saw with the SECN, IMO.
A little known fact. Every ACC team last year produced and did the full broadcast of at least 8 OOC basketball games. They were not required to do this by our current contract with ESPN, but did anyway. Many of these broadcasts ended up on ESPN3, or part of the tier 2 or 3 content that we get paid for.
But, since the ACC schools themselves did the broadcasts all the way down to the cameramen and announcers, ESPN not only paid the ACC for these broadcasts per the regular terms of our agreements, but also paid back quite a premium to the school themselves for the money saved on the broadcasts. In effect, schools made money from TV broadcasts in addition to our regular payout.
Look for this to continue and these to continue to show up more and more on ESPN3 and as time goes along, ESPNU, as well.
Then eventually, as all the schools come up to snuff on production facilities, etc, then a brick and mortar outlet to be established. I don't look for this in this calender year, although I do look for more and more tier 2 and 3 content to start showing up accross the ESPN platforms as this year goes on and into the near future.
We may even see ESPN pay the ACC a premium per team for a year or two before this completely rolls out. I'm thinking 2018-2019.
