What? Hip-hop samples Prince all the time. Autotune has made it
possible to make just about anyone sound good (see just about any modern pop star). However, those who appreciate true musical ability and not just what autotune can offer (and this includes millenials) have an appreciation for who Prince is and what he has accomplished. Ask James Bay what he thinks of Prince and I guarantee you he won't say "who?".
Prince is known for being a vocalist, (and being a little eccentric), but he was more than just a singer. He was also a great songwriter and instrumentalist. He wrote the lyrics, not just for his songs, but for several other artists. Sinead O'Connor became famous singing a song Prince wrote. He could play several instruments, and play them well. As an example, Rolling Stone considers him one of the best guitarists of all time (see link).
There are plenty of good new acts today, but I can't think of anyone that comes close to what Prince was. Am I sad he is gone? No. I never met the man, but I am one who recognizes and admires greatness in others, and yesterday the world lost a musical genius.
