ESPN owns the bowls

Most of the minor bowls that get the 5-7 teams are owned and operated by ESPN, and there is no way that ESPN is going to give up that much highly rated programming without a fight.

A 12 noon Birmingham Bowl game on 12/30/15 drew an audience of 2,412,000.
An 8pm NBA game of 12/16/15 drew an audience of 1,277,000, and the game after it drew 1,969,000.

The Military Bowl on the 28th drew 2,182,000 viewers for a 2:30 kickoff. The only shows that day with more viewers on cable were Monday Night Football, Sportscenter after MNF, Love & Hip-Hop, and Monday Night Raw. It was even higher than FOX and CW's primetime lineup, and almost beat NBC's primetime shows.

As long as ESPN keeps writing checks, and the NCAA and conferences keep cashing them, ESPN will call the shots on the bowls.
