I would guess $250k gets you a good coach.

Of Course $300k would really motivate some candidates. Some ACC coaches get much more but depends on the job greatly. New coach at Clemson, Monte Lee formerly of College of Charleston, Colonial Conference, got a 5 year $350k contract. Coach Kuhn, Pitching coach at UVA, makes $200k-250k+ (yes I know that for a fact) so there is wide disparity. Job security is iffy at ACC level so some guys hesitate to jump that you think would be interested. VT baseball is not equal to Clemson and VT is not viewed as a top job location by any means, but VT has potential, is in the ACC, new facilities coming, and would be attractive to a good coach making $150k-175K, one conference rung down the ladder. Lee made $193k at CofC. What is VT budget? Don't know but Whit will probably deliver the right person and will pay what he has too. It isn't going to break the bank.

Hard part is having money to pay good assistants. The assistants are invaluable and responsible for a lot of the recruiting, camps, and player development. You can't spend it all on the head guy. UVA having O'conner, Kuhn, and McMullen, is the reason for their success. O'Conner wouldn't succeeded to championship caliber with a group of volunteers and scrubs assistants. Kuhn is regarded as the best pitching coach or one of the top three in all of NCAA depending on who you talk too.
(Not suggesting VT has scrubs by the way, Coach Woodard was seen as a real up and comer prior to joining the VT staff.)
