Yes, of course Indiana and Purdue could have stayed in the Original Big Ten Division... but that assumes the real power players (Ohio State and Michigan) would not be looking to "have it all".

The new B1G would be divided up West & East. Nebraska makes no sense in the East, and looking at a map... Indiana and Purdue are the Easternmost originals.

Can't you just imagine OSU & Michigan lining up the divisions where they keep all their traditional rivals... except Indiana & Purdue... and add national powers Nebraska and ND to their side? ND is technically also in Indiana... but we wouldn't want to break up that important Indiana - Purdue rivalry... so ship 'em off :)
