...and another great story from a SoCon message board


^^^One of my favorite wrestlers listed above is Billy Martin-coached BRANDON GLOVER of Virginia Tech. Glover was excellent and about 1959 placed third in the NCAA's at 130 pounds. I ain't looking it up. Anyway, back in those days the VT uniforms (kind of like a singlet with but with leggings and shorts) were a crazy mix of purple, gold and burnt orange. I think it was late December of 1959 at the Wilkes Open, Glover was entered at 130 and Pitt Panther ace, Larry Lauchle (out of Muncy, PA) was in the other bracket. I think that was the year that Lauchle's father had promised him that he'd buy him a car, if he won the Wilkes, made the EIWA finals, and made the NCAA finals. Whatever. Anyway, Glover ended up pinning Lauchle in the WIlkes finals. Lauchle met the other two standards for the car, but fell short at the Wilkes.
