Nice post...m2c...LBs don't block OL, QB was vgood, messedupyeardefensively

I don't think many LBs the size of the ones we use are going to fare well with a gap control scheme where they have to maintain a position... maybe Motu would be better off trying to get around the guy quickly rather than engaging? I think it comes down to the schemes we play... gotta 1) get quicker (perhaps Motu is too big?) or better able to block OL (maybe he is too small) 2) get longer arms / better hand game and 3) read the game better

I think a few thing stand out for me.

1) Foster's schemes rely upon QBs not really knowing the essence of football advantage and thus lacking recognition, when we get guys who do and who are allowed to audible etc we often get taken to the woodshed because our speed and gambling gets PUNISHED... Evans is a baller flat out... maybe not NFL baller but very smart football guy

2) the MLB next year will be the guy who has the best recognition...film study turning into a step faster... first man to that point wins... I actually think #49 has a shot here

3) our DL just flat out cannot get pushed around by an OL like that and expect to have good results... 1v1 we gotta get some wins when the other team decides to run the ball ... speed rush and getting to the QB is great... but when it comes at the expense of run game and scheme... man what a disappointing year on sacks, run game performance, and NFL tryouts... I really thought it was gonna be a blowout year... I think we suffered from 2 CB injuries, loss of a safety... and then this was made worse when Dadi hurt his hands, we lost Marshall for 2 long etc... it was a nightmare year from a how Bud builds defenses - back 4 first... next year I expect us to be much better because we're hopefully gonna have more continuity more shared expectations as a unit

4) I think the MLB could be current, the 205lb guy, the backup, or #49... I think it is a better year for those guys as I think the line will be bigger more effective at least in part because the defensive backfield will be better

5) when I look at #49, I just wonder what we could do with guys like that... keeping feet playing with leverage no fear...I'm sure I just have a sample of plays and that he has alot to learn... but if we're gonna have guys who are light... long arms length seem to help alot... could we just refrain from slapping them into DE until we see where they have the most pro potential? I'm not saying forget VT football... but I'm saying I like having guys on the team who think they can play Sundays... it pisses me off to no end to think as I occasionally do that we have guys who at relatively young ages have figured out they don't have a shot...mebbe I'm reading too much into combine performance etc... I just feel like we must mentally be checked out of the scheme / potential progression to pro and at least part of that is how we select guys for our scheme... i'll take a motivated hungry guy with a dream 10x over instead of a guy who fits a scheme

6) if we don't get our CBs healthy and better... anyone who plays option is going to study this film like a MFER... makes me a little sick to my stomach...even teams with stud WRs that we have to double... I expect them to get us 5 in the box as often as possible... if we had a bigger MLB perhaps we'd platoon him for some of these games... I dunno....

7) really feel like we missed a Vinny Fuller type guy last year... always in the gaps in the backfield causing trouble from the S spot... not sure we have a guy like that on the team...recognition with NFL level athleticism is a great thing to have at S

anyway i'm not a football guy ... not sure I agreed with your assessments... but I appreciate you doing them... my thoughts:

4:17.... for me the scheme didn't work ... our DE was crashing, OLB up field crashing, DTs both blown up 1v1... guy runs through the DE DT(got pushed outside) gap (not Motu's gap) and kept running... our OLB was unblocked had best shot at him but he had to run around the DT who got crushed ... I fail to see how this is Motu's fault... could have read the initial block better... probably could have done better with his hands

10:10... seemed like he was reading the pulling linemen... i don't know football enough to know how this happens, but he seemed in ok position and 24 was with him... he seemed to go wider than the pulling 58...should he or should he not? either way I think he left that gap to 24.... if that is how you play the game... i'd say this was 24s fault.... part of me thinks you should leave the fastest littlest man to the longest gap... i'd rather see Motu stick in the downfield side of 58, let 24 get to the wide side of 58 if necessary

10:17 another pulling OT... once the OT gets by Dadi, almost any LB is gonna be in big trouble... I don't think AM saw him coming... what looked like a nice setup 3 defenders against two offensive guys became 4v3 when they didn't get past the DL, the OLB picked up wide RB, and the QB ran with the ball after the OT picked AM... scheme wise I think someone has to be shooting that gap (AM or 24)... both ended up blocked... the OLB should have gotten a better block on the man who blocked 24... certainly partially AMs issue here.. indecisive lost leverage by not seeing the OT coming and beating him to a better spot

46:20.... this was a bad formation... 5v5 in the box with Motu outside the box with slot receiver coverage, double coverage on both outside WRs... I honestly think the QB audibled into run... and why wouldn't he? no way this is on Motu... BF had the wrong call on

49:22... same thing as last time... 5v5 in the box... this time Motu, 49 in the box, Tulsa OC QB gonna take this every time... 2nd and goal but our 3 rushers are pinning ears back (why do that if you've got extra coverage?)...49 shows you what we should be looking for in LBs... quick doesn't get eaten up at POA, holds up his end in the bargain... Motu overplays, then gets eaten up by the block, RB adjusts and TD... sure its partially Motu's fault here but not sure I buy our MLB is ready to take on OLmen in relatively empty spaces... 50% BF, 50% AM

1:01 ... pretty awesome read by the Tulsa QB... 24 and AM were in good shape on the primary gap... 24 didn't trust the guy in front of him and bit hard... AM bit as well... but we had a safety shooting around the other edge with the OLB... you pay for these decisions in option football... if they don't get there you are weak up the middle... when a reasonable person looks at the run / cutback lane it is pretty clear we have a blocker unaccounted for... slow to the action means guys are going to have hats on them... I'd say 25% 24, 25% Motu, 50% Foster
