Bracket Results and Thoughts

125 – As a fan, I would have liked to seen a little more offense from Joey - 1To create a little separation and 2 to get the bonus points we thought we needed(wouldn’t have mattered). At this point in the season (maybe career) I guess this is just the style Joey’s going to wrestle. Keep it close, try to throw the legs in and ride, and look to win with 1 or 2 take downs. At NCAA’s that’s all that matters. Gilman has been majoring guys like Fausz and Youtszey all year, but that didn’t help him Saturday night in the 1 takedown match against Mega.

133- Really think it would have been better to be the 4 seed here, as the consolation bye was huge. It appears to me Morris comes out firing, and them tends to gas a little at the end. That was Dennis’ advantage, but wrestling 2 matches in 2 hours vs Morris’ 1 negated that advantage. There were 2 debatable nearfall situations in the match. I could see them argued either way, but very frustrating we got 0 and they got 2. 3rd period strategy wise I think you could go either way. Ride and try to turn, or cut him quick and go for 2 takedowns. We rode for a while, then cut him. Think we should have dedicated the whole period to either strategy, but hindsight is always 20/20.

141 – Didn’t get to see the Ward match. I guess we won on a stall call or technical point? Either way, beating Ward 2x this year is huge, and will help his NCAA seed. If he’s ever going to beat Jack, he’s probably to have to get the 1st takedown. Jack is way too comfortable and good at eating out the clock with a lead and his reach.

149 – Sal is Sal and I expected him to give up a takedown or 2. Difference in this match was he was unable to ride or turn him with the bow and arrow. Can’t question Sal’s effort, he gives everything he’s got. Unfortunately he got out of position at the worst time in that match. The fall hurt, and I can’t recall ever seeing that situation before. As Jersey said before and after, that match turned the tournament.

157 – Still think Nick is a better wrestler than Gannt, and that’s not taking anything away from Gannt. Nick showed us how good he is against Cottrell of WVU this year. He dominated a solid wrestler who gave Gannt a tough match that same weekend. Maybe he hut the knee worse against Atkinson in the dual, but man he’s not the same now. You could see the knee give out a few times just when he was circling yesterday against Gannt. Hopefully Devin will donate some of his unicorn blood, and Nick can hold it together for 1 more tournament.

165- Great job finishing 3rd. He maxed out team points for us. NCAA’s will most likely come down to match ups for McFadden, but if he can go 3-2 or 2-2 that will be great experience for next year.

174 – This match was technique vs athlete and athlete won last night. Not saying Ramos isn’t a solid, technical wrestler, just that his athleticism bailed him out last night. Epp got in deep several times, and patiently worked through each step of the technique book in attempt to finish. Problem was Ramos was able to break the rules with his athleticism. I (and that UVA, Foley announcer who I can’t understand how he keeps getting paid to announce and discuss the sport of wrestling) thought for sure Epp was going to score after he cleared his head, but it wasn’t to be. I think Epp can adjust and beat Ramos. Problem is he didn’t last night, and what will that mean for his NCAA seed?

184- Like others, I was worried about Renda based on his last 2 wins. Zach said no. He came out strong, and finished with a ridiculous scramble to seal the match. Zach has progressed amazingly this year, and NCAA’s have the potential to be exciting.

197 – Hartman was just too solid with his positioning and very hard to score on. Haught had a great year, and I think his matches against Nye this year compared to last are a good measuring stick of his progression. Would love to see him place at NCAAs.

285 – Great effort by Ty. Got in deep, threated Gwiz, but where Ty was able to get Coon’s hips moving, Gwiz just threw up the stop sign and shut it down. Gwiz is dang good and I’m sure most wrestling fans can’t wait to see Gwiz vs Snyder in the finals. However, I won’t lose any sleep if Synder gets oh say…. the 4 seed due to his lack of matches.

Team wise, I see a few people saying the 6 team format tournament hurt us. That may have been the case 4-5 years ago, but I don’t think so the last 2 years. Last year we crapped the bed in Pittsburgh. This year we pretty much wrestled to seed other than 1 weight. (McFadden’s higher placement canceling out one of Gus or Sal’s lower placement). I though NC State was a bigger favorite “On paper” going into the tournament than the seeding projections because their best 4 guys were solid, heavy favorites. I think that mayl also be the case heading into NCAA’s, but lets go prove that theory wrong.

Here's the results of the bracket picks.
