CIC doesn't generate any money.

It is a consortium that is used to collectively bargain for supplies for the universities. It's an integrated fiber optic network for high speed data transmission for research. It's integrated libraries. It's collaborative curricula and research projects.

The CIC aggregates the collective research budgets of all of its members and promotes how big the aggregate is, but the CIC is not responsible for any of the grants.

It would be harder to walk away from the Big Ten Network than to walk away from the CIC. Faculty involved with collaborative projects wouldn't like it, but who is to say they couldn't continue with them.
