Way too early ACC thoughts

Well ill be traveling next week so i get to drop off some ACC thoughts early:

125: Its pretty much title or bust for Joey Dance. He's the class of this weight and we need to see a confident deliberate and dominant wrestler here. He keeps inchings closer and closer to a MD over herrman, but i somehow doubt he gets it. I also have a gut feeling bentley upsets Fausz, setting joey up for an interesting final (and big for the team points as fausz loses a ton in that scenario). Dance should win another ACC title, but i dont expect any bonus points from him.

133: I'm going to assume dennis gets the 3 seed here. Should he get the 4 seed, thats a tough matchup with Dicamillo, i do not like it. With the 3 seed, he either forfeits through or catches Duke Leylaud. If duke weighs a wrestler in, thats a fantastic opportunity for dennis to earn big bonus points for the hokies. Then after a win he gets forys. His 14-4 MD loss at pitt was ugly, and i think it will be a lot closer, but i dont know if i see dennis closing the gap that much. Back to wrestlebacks, where he likely catches Syzmanski, who he majored when he first re-entered the lineup (had the tilt working if i remember correctly). Again another good chance for dennis to earn bonus for the hokies. Then its on to the big one, a likely showdown with Morris for the last bid. If gus hadnt won in the fashion he did at raleigh, i'd be worried, but it takes a lot of guts and gas tank to come back from 0-4 to win 13-5. I like gus here to steal a bid and go dancing.

141: Incredibly dangerous matchup in the semis after a bye for solomon. We need him to earn the full 2 pt advancement, and ward at #3 is a nightmare matchup. He looked great in his huge upset win over heil last weekend, and im not to confident this isnt a 1 pt affair. Sully won 7-3 last time but i get nervous for this one. Should he win, Chishko Jack will be another thriller. As much as it pains me, its hard to pick against jack right now, and i'm not sure i see the upset. Good second place finish for solomon.

149: Will the real Sal Mastriani please stand up? Good news if Sal draws the 3-6 bout which should give him great potential for bonus against Lee (6-1 last time). If he advances he gets M. Finesilver, whch is just an awful matchup with finesilver's length. Not sure i see Sal winning that semi, but it will be very very important for him to come back in consolations and earn 3rd place points for the hokies. Think he takes 3rd, preventing Donahue from distancing the wolfpack in the team score.

157: So I didnt make too much noise about it after NWCAs, but i really dont think nick is 100% healthy nor will he be at any point in the post season. The match with atkinson is scary because it was so close in the season for both he and gantt. Tech needs to have those points because again an upset drops 2 assumed advancement points. Not sure if nick gets it done in the semis, and should he meet Gantt in the finals, dont like that matchup at all.

165: Time for young Mr. McFadden to pull it all together and make a statement. If he gets the 5 seed, he gets a pretty decent road all things considered. Last we saw him and wiercioch, he was on the short end of the stick in a last second takedown situation. It just reinforced the fact that he needs to rev up his motor far earlier in the period, and i liked what he did at michigan even if it was a backup. I think he knocks off wiercioch, for a big championship advancement point. He still has issues with the Rohskopf funk, and i dont see that upset happening (would probably go a long way to clinching the team title for us though). Then in wrestlebacks after a victory over Baldwin/peppleman, if he gets Staudenmeyer, i like him to take 3rd, if he gets Faust, i like him to take 4th.

174: Epp Campbell will be fun considering it was a pin last time. Campbell made a really poor positioning choice and epperly pounced. Not sure this one ends in pin, but epperly walks away with the major (60% bonus rate this year fwiw). Then the big question that we missed in the regular season, is Ramos for real at 174? Personally i dont see Ramos beating epperly. What struck me last year at ACCs was how huge Ramos was for 165. I think he loses a bit of that advantage adding 9 lbs to the weight class. I see a close decision, but this is likely another championship for the hokies. Strangely enough, if Epp gets the #1 seed and Hall gets the #4 seed, thats a less advantageous semi matchup in my mind.

184: Well we can officially say the ZZ train has arrived. My hand wringing prior to NWCAs was in vain, Zavatsky took it to Abounader, looking to be the better wrestler in all phases of the match. I like him a lot to win and ACC championship as a freshman here. His first match with either adamson or UVAs 184 should be a breeze, and in the finals I like him over either utley who he has figured out, or Renda (who by the way RPI computers love him). Championship seems right for ZZ and the hype train picks up speed.

197: Big Big weekend for Haught, after the disastrous ACC tournament he had last year. Looked like a shellshock victim after his loss to Nye. 197 is tough in the ACC this year, or at least the selection committee thought so, as they will wrestle this weight to all 6 places. I like haught over everyone but hartman, and if the ref actually calls stalling in the final, this could be a huge upset brewing. I wont predict the upset due to the long history between Haught and the duke wrestler, but a solid 2nd place finish for Haught. Definition of incremental improvement.

HWT: Probably the most cut and dry of the weight classes. Ty and Gwiaz are a good cut above the rest and barring complete collapse, we see the two again in the finals. Not sure how ty beats gwiaz, but a good finish in 2nd for Ty.

Team race: At this point it almost seems like every weight class is hokie vs. wolfie in both championship and consolation finals. If VT wrestles well, this one ends up out of reach and i think we see Brascetta lift that ACC title as a senior.
