Re: What I am suggesting is that if the power conferences
That's an unrealistic vision considering the differences between NCAA and NFL members. First of all, the NFL has 32 members who are all uncontested "owners" of their respective markets. The P65 is twice as large and the quality from top to bottom is too widely varied. Large numbers of schools are perennially weak, and would diminish the overall value of the product.
The SEC and the B1G are working within the P5 framework, for now, but I am certain that they have both considered what a P2 with 36 to 48 teams might be worth in media dollars. The ACC needs to find revenue sources before the media deal ends in 2027. The two neighboring conferences will arrive in VA and NC carrying bags of money. The Big12 will be targeted too, but they have fewer plum schools. Here's a possibility that is not often talked about: Everyone thinks the PAC12 is safe from poaching. I don't believe it. If the PACN doesn't start earning bigger paydays, that conference could find itself lagging in facilities, coaches, etc. Wash.St. and Ore. St. are heavily subsidized. Both states could decide to support only the premier program in each state. There is history between the PAC and the B1G. If the B1G could sign-up Stanford, Cal, UCLA, Washington, USC, maybe an AZ school, they could completely strike-out in VA, NC and still have a humongous coast to coast TV footprint.
That is when the PX conferences will look for a package deal from TV networks; when they are no longer saddled with Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Iowa State, etc.
BTW, only in the ACC will you find posters who think TV networks should have ANY say in conference structure, EVER.
