It just hids the tax from obvious perception which makes it less
objectionable. When you see a large amount removed from your paycheck, it is obvious to all who pay it. When they bury it in the pricing, and do not point to it directly, most people do not even think about the tax portion of it. A spoon full of sugar so to speak.
The bad part about this is that they can increase it at will with hardly any objection since no one thinks about it anyway. It is much harder to increase a direct tax which everyone sees hitting the bottom line directly. The typical sin taxes operate in this manner. [Post edited by WhoopACC Hokie at 02/23/2016 12:38PM]
