You're missing the cause and effect

VT isnt generally going to get big AND athletic guys. It lives in a world of choosing between smaller, faster or bigger, slower - and usually errs on the side of smaller, faster. Thus the system is designed for that because that's what VT has most of the time.

When Wiles is talking about the need for speed, it's because as a general rule they favor quick twitch over size since they rarely have both. Its just a philsophical decision based out of necessity. And if you dont have size, you better have the speed. But Settle presents them with a different scenario - a guy with size+ and quick twitch. If Settle can use size and quickness to disrupt at the LOS and offensive backfield between the tackles, that frees up a half a player for the edges and offsets his lack of lateral speed.

In many ways, it's like the opportunities a shut down corner provides. This is why Foster was foaming at the mouth over Settle.

As long as Settle can provide the advantages of a DT with size and quickness, I'm not overly concerned about a lack of lateral speed and how Foster/Wiles would incorporate him.
