I agree the concept wouldn't currently work at VT.

However, we are entering a new era of VT athletics and maybe even college athletics (in general). So if VT wants to continue participating at the highest level (aka in a power conference), then at some point it may have to take a hard (and I mean a very HARD) look at its business model.

Now I am not suggesting the tickets or pass have to be fancy. It could be something similar to what you see at a county fair or even at the HS level. Since VA doesn't allow taxpayer dollars to fund collegiate athletic capital projects, VT may be forced to get "creative" on how it raises the funds. Also, those additional funds could be used for a good cause. When I was at VT ('96-'00) or (relatively) soon after I graduated, I seem to remember that a recruit and his mother (I think they were from Richmond or 757) died in an auto accident on their way home from an official visit at VT. I want to say that VT established a scholarship in his honor.

I guess my underlying point is that it seems the game is changing for the good and for the bad. If VT and its fanbase is truly not willing to play the game, then could we wake up one day to hear that VT decided to leave whatever power conference to join whatever non-power conference?
