How do you know these programs are unprofitable?

It is possible that a school (maybe even quite a few schools) find some of these "non-revenue" programs "profitable" for a variety reasons. Also, just because a program is deemed to be "unprofitable" doesn't mean the school can automatically drop it. Remember that Title IX is still the big elephant in the room that no one really wants to talk about at this juncture. Title IX becomes an even bigger elephant when a school (i.e. VT) only sponsors the bare minimum number of sports to compete at a certain division level. It is possible that an unprofitable program could be saved because eliminating it would also require eliminating a profitable program in order to comply with Title IX or require the school to sponsor a new sport to take its place.
