Pylons and bigbadbird......
Interesting discussion/back and forth you guys had regarding the UNC situation yesterday. A couple of thoughts I have from following the saga. Racism while not overtly stated by most has been mentioned and there is lots of dancing around the edges. Whether you want to argue racism from the perspective of the majority of athletes funneled to that curriculum or a less direct tact that the major chosen was specifically picked to allow UNC to ward off people that questioned the program by playing the race card it is an issue, while maybe not at the surface, does not lie very far beneath.
For me it really doesn't matter what argument a person chooses to stand on racism, greed, fraud , immoral, etc., etc.. What has been perpetrated at UNC, defended by UNC leadership that knows better and covered up by people both inside and outside of UNC strikes at the very core of collegiate athletics and the shift from an academic pursuit to a mix of academics/athletics/business to a purely athletic/business endeavor. Athletics today at the Power 5 level for revenue sports in a significant number of schools(the number grows larger every year as the $$ grow) has become nothing more than a glorified, minor league training ground for the professional leagues without those leagues having the funding liability. IMO, there is no way any investigation should take 5+ years and if it does take such a long time it is extremely hard to understand how punishment cannot reach a commensurately significant level.
