The best compact camera you can buy is the Sony RX100

It's the best and it's not really close, but you're going to pay for it. They are PRICY. However, you can save some cash if you get an older generation. The newer generations have more features (pop up viewfinder, wifi, etc.) but they sensor and lense is still pretty much the same from the first generation. So you can get a good deal if you don't care about the new extras.
