Yet we have proof of an event that contradicts your assertion.

See the 2009 game in Atlanta. And I would imagine the President of the University of Alabama is much more intune with the fan support than most. It was described as Alabama leadership as "eye-opening." Nobody has been around enough or been educated enough to no longer be surprised in this world.

And when it comes to decisions about Athletics conference expansion, surprses regarding the fan support or the lack of fan support of considered schools matter. It can and should be the top consideration because it effects TV and bowl payouts.

I've been to most VT home games for 18 years now, and I was indeed surprised by the fan support we exhibited in Atlanta in 2009. And yes, there have been surprised at the lack of fan support Hokie Nation's exhibited at times. There's been ACCCGs and bowls in which I had thought I would see more orange and maroon there.
