I agree that satellites are probably the primary means


to gathering intelligence. However, I would that any government has a contingency plan which may involve a spy plane. The scenarios that crossed my mind include loss of communication (temporary or permanent) with a specific satellite, cloud cover, or a lack of surprise. Since all satellites have a specific orbit, then a foreign government could alter its behavior to coincide with the specific times that a satellite will pass over potential areas of interest (think behavior patterns at Area 51). At least with a spy plane or spy drone a government could maintain an element of surprise.

Like you, the SR-71 is one of my favorite planes (the other being the concorde).
