In their defense, head-to-head is not the only thing that counts.

Here's what I see when comparing resumes:

(+) VT head-to-head victory over NCSU.
(-) VT losses to ISU, PSU versus no other losses for NCSU.
(+) VT loss to undefeated PSU was closer than any other team. We're their only match all year where flipping one result might have changed the victor. (Don't know who would have won an 18-18 match on criteria.)
(+) VT loss to ISU was with several starters injured.

(-) NCSU 3-1 (OkSt, Missouri, Nebraska) vs. Intermat dual top 10, VT 1-1
(-) NCSU 6-1 vs. top 25 (UNC, Minnesota, UVA), VT 4-2 (ISU, UNC, UVA)

If you just look at head-to-head, the answer is clear. If you look at other data, the case isn't so clear-cut. Despite the injuries, we did lose to ISU in the Virginia Duals.

If this call were to keep out out of the competition entirely, I'd be very bothered. While I'd love to see VT-Iowa, there other matches that would be pretty compelling.
