I think the Gimple and his writers are spread too thin (FTWD) and / or losing their touch. This episode was pretty stupid in key spots.

One thing about Carl: Nicotero explained on Talking Dead that the bullet essentially hit and shattered the eye socket, ricocheting away from the eye. The extensive damage you saw was the result of the bone shattering in toward the eyeball. I agree with you though, and while it was a cool look it wouldn't have removed his eyeball, for instance.
