Often, the players are in a psychological funk, and that causes the slump. And, it will last if they don't get out of it. Coaches and psychologist can and do help. I think your assertion is just wrong. Sorry!

Pat Summit was known to periodically, but infrequently, lock her Lady Vols team out of the locker room for days, in order to get the team focused and playing better. That is drastic, but that is coaching to get a team out of a slump.
