The Big 12 looks less at markets than visibility or strength of brand

From all I have read and heard, the Big 12 focuses less on how large the local television market is and more on how visible the program is, i.e., how well it draws on a regional and national basis.

This is why the Big 12 preferred WVU to Louisville, and preferred Louisville to Cincinnati, and so on. The Big 12 doesn't ignore markets but they look at things more like the SEC. In other words, they perceived WVU was a much stronger brand than, say, UCF, even though UCF is in the middle of a big city in a growing state. They took TCU because TCU had become a strong brand, not because it was situated in Fort Worth --- Texas and Oklahoma, among others, already deliver the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
