True. The FCS (as we know it today) began in 1984......

with the playoffs.

I remember as a student at Tech in 1984 hearing that Tech was no longer in the same division as VMI, Richmond, and William & Mary. A lot of D-1 schools with lesser football programs moved to FCS (1-AA) after the 1983 season. I just remember a few fans saying the days of Tech playing VMI, UR, and Billy & Mary annually were coming to an end. That was about the time cable TV began showing more college football with ESPN and TBS.
