With their respective approaches to the "deregulation" issue, the Big 12 and the ACC reveal differing mindsets toward the playoffs.
The Big 12 believes that their lack of a Conference Championship games robs them of an opportunity to enhance the resume of their best team in the eyes of the CFP committee. They could have an undefeated team (12-0) who is being judged against another undefeated team that is 13-0. All things being equal the Big 12 team may lose out. So despite the inherent risk of putting the perfect record in jeopardy, they want to deliver a conference champion who has as many wins as possible. This game will always be a rematch of a regular season opponent. I like that attitude.
Since JS will not be specific about his intentions, we can assume that he simply wants to manipulate the ACC championship matchup in way that eliminates the chance of a weak (2 or 3 losses) division champion upsetting the ACC favorite son. Exactly the opposite attitude of the Big 12.
The team that wins the National Championship will always be one that will play any team, any time, anywhere, regardless of the risk. Just follow the schedule, John, and let the chips fall.
