Nobody said life was fair or that JJ got the opportunity he deserved, however, as a veteran of the industry and, more importantly, already familiar with the VT situation, he had to understand the calculated risks he was taking. Getting those opportunities or free passes is often a function of understanding the situation you are about to enter and controlling the factors you can to give yourself a chance for success. Sometimes a promotion is not a promotion. Bud Foster has often been criticized for being too selective/discriminating in considering head coaching opportunities and some of that discretion would have probably served JJ well in his deliberations, a point driven home further now with the benefit of hindsight. There's a reason the windshield is larger than the rear view mirror, you don't forget the past or not learn from it but, if you're always looking back it makes moving forward difficult at best.
