UofL acts as the professional sports team for that city.

It's a metro area of 1.3 million people that has no professional sports. So when those people and local corporate sponsors want to follow local football, the Cardinals are the game in town. Same for basketball.

Tom Jurich has done a good job integrating those sports teams into the local community for support.
