Maybe Ohio U's location? It's the oldest college in Ohio...
founded in 1804. Athens is in rural southeast Ohio. It's more rural than Blacksburg or State College. Ohio State was founded in 1870 (2 years before Tech) but it's location (in the state capital and geographic center of the state) might be the reason it grew into Ohio's major university. Big 10 membership separated tOSU from the rest of the D1 state universities over the years.
Tech is under 4 hours from Athens or 225 miles. We played them in the mid-late 2000's. Ohio U's campus reminds me of UVA without Thomas Jefferson. The architecture is very similar. Ohio U has a party school reputation.
I understand what you're asking. It seems like Ohio U should've been at the same level (or even higher) as Ohio State just based on history but somewhere in Ohio history the decision was made to make tOSU the state's flagship university. Maybe it's because Columbus is between Cincinnati and Cleveland? Maybe Ohio U wasn't as aggressive as tOSU in the early 20th century? Maybe it was political? Who knows. All I know is Athens, Ohio is pretty much located in the boonies of rural southeastern Ohio. Southeastern Ohio is also part of Appalachia and has just as much in common with West Virginia and Kentucky as it does with Ohio.
