Haven't done the trip to the stadium, but Amtrak to Penn Station is much better than driving (especially if you plan to stay overnight in Manhattan). Here's their advice on how to use Amtrak to attend a game at Yankee stadium (which I have drive to on a day trip - surprisingly easy to find parking for a game). Combining trip to stadium with Amtrak to NYC sounds very doable (should you choose that option).
