Its a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Had he just done what you stated and said "Here's the scoop and I'm not telling you how I know"... he would have been called out just the same by people asking him to prove how he knew or what his connection to the program is. By stating he was connected through family and monetary donations, he is giving an answer by telling people where he got the info without revealing enough to know exactly who he is and be banned from access to future information (or getting his family member banned). I took his sentence as stating that a member of his family is a big donor to Tech and based on that was privy to some inside information and then told him about it. It could be that the University was reaching out to big donors to obtain monetary commitments in order to ensure they could meet salary negotiations, buyouts, etc. If that is the case, I'm assuming there are people who wouldn't necessarily blindly agree to donate large sums of money without some idea of who it was going to be used to hire. Perhaps this person's family member falls into that category.
That being said, I'm not saying I believe the OP. This "nugget" as a first post is suspect. But it could be plausible.
