In some ways, I do think the ACC (as it stands now) may have similar issues
that the Big East faced when it sponsored football. I guess that is 1 of the reasons I came up with the proposal I did because it would keep like schools together in 1 conference.
It is possible that ESPN didn't want to see the ACC fulfill your proposal. However, what I find interesting is that the SEC explored the possibility of expanding to a 16 member conference in the late 90s. The plan was to add Miami, WVU, VT, and 1 other school. It appears that Miami may have killed that proposal while it was still in the informal inquiry stage. At least that is the sense I got from talking to people after I had graduated from VT. Now VT did use the situation to its advantage because VT was able to get full membership in the Big East in exchange for recommitting to the BEFC. Hence why I am not sure the Big East was ready to let the BEFC go. If ESPN was protecting the SEC in the 90s, then I would think ESPN would have gotten involved and supported the SEC's expansion proposal.
