Are pretty close to how I saw it as well. The Big East was a sham. You are right the BEFC seldom got deserved praise and the same can be said for the ACC at times. Maybe it is as you say, a result of having so many private schools, which always lean basketball.

I think instead of a raid the ACC and BEFC should have merged as was proposed at the time. The new conference would retain 8 teams in each division the The Old ACC and the BEFC, which means one of the old ACC teams would need to move to the BEFC division. I would push UMD or UVA in that regard. Alternatively they could have moved Miami to the ACC and moved both UMD and UVA into the BEFC division.

I think all of the chaos that came along for everyone would be different and it would have been an incredible conference for that time.
