This is because of the G5 fallacy


Too many AD’s look for the hot name and assume that success in G5 will equate to success at P5 level. And the main assumption is that G5 success comes from good coaching, which can only benefit from better resources and recruiting.

The reality is that winning at the G5 level is completely different and can be masked by a couple of P5 level players combined with a weaker competition load. Winning is different than good coaching. And college football is littered with schools that made this mistake (including VT now).
