ESPN put out the hit on them

They thought that by taking Tex/OU from the BigXII that would end the BigXII by having the remaining members end up in the PAC, ACC, B1G, and/or AAC. Sure they would lose some schools to FOX, but they could elevate the AAC to P5 status giving them 3 of the 5 P5 conferences.

The BigXII went for the Hail Mary, hit it by getting BYU (ESPN school), and UCF, Cincy, Houston from the AAC, arguably 4 of the largest TV markets in the AAC. ESPN wasn't going to have one of their properties go out, so the AAC raided the C-USA, not one of ESPN's TV partners.

Unless the remaining members of C-USA can convince UMass, UConn, Liberty, UTEP, & NMSU to join as football only, they will need to find an all sports conference, become Independents in football where they will each receive about $500K a year in the College Football Playoff money instead of splitting the $17M a season that C-USA distributes to the members.
