UVA Olympic sports also benfit from being able to attract smart kids

in suburban sports like lacrosse and swimming who ultimately want to go to law school, med school or Wall Street, where the UVA alumni network and connections are strong. That's also how the Duke, Northwestern, Stanford and Ivies get good Olympic athletes.

The other game that many of those big endowment schools can play is that they give free tuition to anyone with parents making under $100K. UVA doesn't do it yet, but the others mentioned above all do. If you are a sprinter or outfielder with a single parent from the inner city, you can get a free ride at Duke, but not VT.
