Punters are better these days than in the past, with all the summer specialty camps that they grow up going to. It's easier to pin opponents deep. Fair catching it inside the 10 wasn't a good decision back in the day, but these days if the gunners are already surrounding you, it's generally a better idea to back up a little bit (to say the 7) and fair catch it there, otherwise there's a very good chance that it's going to be downed even deeper.
