Outside of football and baseball and maybe a few elite non-rev athletes, there are almost no full scholarships - portions of the equivalents are shared among the athletes based on merit. This requires athletes in search of more funding to rely on merit scholarships and other sources that they can stack with the athletic scholarship, and that is where VT is at a distinct disadvantage. I know in particular one of the difficulties attracting swimmers is they can get supplemental academic merit aid and out-of-state tuition discounts at a lot of schools but not VT. Two of my kids went to private schools where they got a lot of merit aid they would not have gotten in a VA state school.
