Pretty complex situation. The drug actually created a lot of addicts

I know far too many people who were prescribed the medication after surgical procedures, got hooked, and then spiraled into addiction. Pretty much ruined the marriage of one of my best friends since childhood (and his now ex-wife appears to be struggling mightily).

It's true that abuse by people chasing the high was present almost immediately with the introduction of the drug. But a lot of the current addicts are a result of the drug itself -- and the company knew that it was probably addictive (beyond the "less than 1%" that they were allowed to promote). It's debatable whether or not it is acceptable for the general public to blame the "pill heads" for their own plight, but the fact that Purdue sales personnel used that term and continued to pump the drug even after they knew about the socioeconomic consequences seems borderline criminal.
