Wanting different coaches and better outcomes for the football program are totally reasonable.

But wanting the head coach to publicly criticize/blame playcalling is cringeworthy for two reasons.

1. It is SO CLICHED and simplistic. We all have that fan who sits behind us at the game who blames every play that doesn’t work on the play call. It’s such a lazy criticism. It shows an inability to think. The people making these criticisms rarely know what the play actually was. They just see “run up middle” or “run to the outside.” They don’t know what the defense is trying to do or how the play is designed to attack that defense. They just work backwards from the outcome. The play didn’t work so it MUST be a bad play call. It couldn’t possibly be poor execution, lack of talent, or a good play call or play by the other team.

2. What head coach worth his salt is going to have a sustainable career publicly criticizing his coaches? How would Fuente possibly recruit Corny’s replacement if he were to criticize him to the fans/media? Asking him to do something so counterproductive reveals a child-like, need for an emotionally-gratifying act. The fan is upset with the OC and deeply needs to know the HC is upset with him as well. But that’s silly. No good coach is going to show that kind of lack of professionalism and self-control. That’s for the Bo Pellinis of the world.

So sure, want a new coach. Demand better results. But think through what it is you’re wanting the head coach to express publicly, why you want him to express it, and why he won’t do so.

Fuente not criticizing Corny publicly does NOT mean Fuente doesn’t see a problem. It just means he isn’t going to express the concern publicly.

I doubt Corny even makes it through the season. Fuente will likely be calling plays before long. If that happened tomorrow, would it make you feel better?
