That seems crazy high to me

You can definitely get a replacement, a really good one, for under a grand retail. If you are handy at all, it's not a difficult job. Spend a little money and get Sharkbite fittings and you will not have to bother with sweating pipes. I put them in, including flexible connections, about 10 years ago and have not had any issues. Added a 1/4 turn ball valve to isolate at the tank if I need to work on it again later and don't have to cut water to the whole house. Less that $100 for all the fittings for my job.

Call a buddy up, provide the beer and make a Saturday afternoon job of it.
