Maybe the MAC considers that an experiment tried and failed

But they do have some positives. Both are great universities, way better than most in the MAC, except for I suppose Buffalo.

They are both very large compared to the others in the MAC. They have good followings in other sports, so they do have a fan base that could be awakened to football, at least to MAC standards.

The MAC would probably get another bowl tie-in.

In a decent league like the MAC, they would likely be much better than they are now. UMass was not, but it was only a few years. UConn has been very good in their FBS past before.

It would extend the MAC footprint into two very populated next door states, which would probably benefit their TV contracts.

Plus they are probably desperate enough to accept a deal that is better than what would normally be available to the MAC, like the MAC could probably get a few basketball games in the agreement (UMass provided 4 per year before, so 4 more from UConn would be good). Or the MAC could get them to let the original 12 members keep the entire CFP payout, which is capped at a bit over a million a team, but limited to 12 shares. Plus I suppose they could get them to buy their way in, at least by accepting less TV money for a long time.

UConn would probably agree to being in the West division, making changes to their current division unnecessary. They would partner with each other, of course, so that game could turn into a decent rivalry.

At some point, I would expect the MAC to be interested in those two. If I were a MAC fan, I would be tired of their rep as a unambitious regional league. Of course, they could have done the same with UMass and JMU years ago, but they passed on that, too, so I guess they like things regional and isolated.
