Question on Amtrak to/from DC to NYC


I live in the DC area and have to be in NYC on Tuesday afternoon from 3 until about 5. Plan is to take a 10am or so train out of DC and jump back on around 7 in NYC. If I book a ticket for lets say 7pm leaving NYC, and I decide I want to leave an hour before or after, is that easy to do w/the ticket I have? If I recall the tickets are pretty interchangeable but its been awhile since I've make the trek via train.
