He always asks questions that are, while difficult questions, are questions that somebody like me wouldn’t ask because I know the coach isn’t going to give me an answer. For example, I’m not going to ask Justin Fuente about taking over play calling duties because the question’s been asked before and I know I’m not going to get anything out of it. All I’m going to do is annoy him. Those are the types of questions that Berman asks. I’ve gotten to know him pretty well over the years and he’s a nice guy, but he can be really annoying a lot of times because he pesters for answers.

Buzz would get a question after the game about how will Justin Robinson played and go on a five minute explanation of his backstory, and Berman would follow it up with, “What’s going on with Landers Nolley’s SAT scores?” But he’d do it every game. For Buzz, he got annoyed because Berman kept pestering and pestering and pestering and always wanted answers.

With Mike, it’s a little different because they have known each other for a really long time. Not that Mike loves Berman, but he respects him. Berman may not always ask the best questions, but Mike always gives fair answers and doesn’t really take cheap shots at them. They do joke around with each other and it’s all in good fun. I believe he jokingly told Doug Doughty, “here’s my phone number. Whatever you do, don’t give it to Berman.”

I can’t speak to Mark before my time when I started at VT in 2017, but he’s like that way with every coach and every player. Whether it’s covering men’s soccer‘s win over Marshall, and Berman is trying to get answers out of Brizendine, or talking to Kenny Brooks after a woman’s basketball win. He’s always digging. I think most coaches respect it, like Mike and Kenny. Buzz didn’t.
