Well, I’m not in Kansas anymore…

Back in Oklahoma City, waiting for my 5:10 flight. Had a pretty terrific day yesterday in Wichita, visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright “Allen house” really my only “A” list item for this entire trip and it did not disappoint. Love that stuff, paid the extra bucks for the thorough three hour grand tour with the unstumpable docent. On the way back, stopped by a bluegrass festival in Guthrie, Oklahoma, gave me something to do for the evening and checked off the serendipity quotient for my trip.

The festival was put together by a guy named Byron Burline who apparently passed away just a couple months ago, never heard of him but he wrote a song with Bill Monroe, was in the Flying Burrito Brothers and various other groups, Gave a young Vince Gill a job in one of his them, and did work for none other than the Rolling Stones. Who knew? So a little bit surreal when everyone’s talking about this guy you never heard of and just missed. A little sad too make because I overheard discussions on whether or not the festival will continue on for another 25 years.

Anyway, still got time* but moving kind of slow and just feel like drinking coffee, ‘course the hotel is going to kick me out in half an hour. One of other docents at the Allen house brought up how inaccessible Kansas is to tourism, I concurred saying there’s a reason why it is one of the last few states I hadn't visited. Probably the the only time I've made a point of visiting the two states and then having to figure what to do once I got there. It's been fun but don't expect to return without an external reason: maybe women's softball will make it to the women's world series next year! There's a reason. Travel tips? If you go to Wichita stay near the “old town” Good restaurants, museums etc. all in walking distance. Nice low-key Central District.

Ciao

* did make it downtown OK city for a few hours and hit their museum, they have an exhibition of Chiluly glass - I mean, I've heard of it, not really something I'm in to - but pretty cool for something to do. A 20 minute RT walk would have gotten me to the bombing site, but just didn't want to deal with unhappy things. (and, in retrospect, really needed to leave myself a little time to get to the airport without stressing out.)
