It appears that 7 of those 8 potential new members...


talked Tech into forming the Big East Football Conference during that 1990 Charlotte meeting. ;)

That was an uncertain time in college football. South Carolina left for the SEC, FSU for the ACC and Penn State for the Big 10. That 16 team super confernece would've been a good football conference but it was never to be. 10 of those 16 schools are or will be (Cincinnati) Power 5 schools. The biggest loser from that bunch was Southern Mississippi. They were once a respectable football program and had several Top 25 seasons. ECU is probably loser #2 with Temple closely behind. . At one point in the 1990's, ECU's football program was at the same level as Tech and WVU. It appears that ECU is now behind Appalachian State in the North Carolina pecking order. They may have to watch out for Charlotte. Duke isn't that good but they're in the Power 5 as is Wake (who is playing well so far this season).
