Thank you for this, Hurley. Military gravesite ceremonies are overwhelming.

When my Dad died in 1985, he was given the full treatment a retired US Army Infantry Field Officer was accorded. 3rd Infantry horse-drawn caisson from the Ft. Myer, VA chapel on into Arlington National Cemetery. It was November and it was cold and rainy, but I chose to walk behind his caisson from the chapel to the ceremony site.

His gravesite had not been designated yet - it takes a long time for that - so the ceremony was conducted at the intersection of two drives. My Mother was presented the flag, and she in later years passed it on to me. I kept it displayed in a triangular flag holder and two years ago packed it up and sent it on to my nephew on the occasion of his 50th birthday. He's my only surviving family member now and he has two sons, so Dad's flag's in good hands for the foreseeable future.
