I was researching Jeffrey Hunter (Captain Pike) a couple days ago.


Hunter did the Star Trek pilot, but he passed on doing a second pilot because he decided he would rather work on his movie career. So William Shatner pretty much owes his career to Jeffrey Hunter.

Hunter died just a few years later, in May of 1969, at the age of 42. His Wikipedia bio is an interesting read, including a quote from Marilyn Monroe about how handsome he was.
