Mixed takeaways...
Right after Tori Powell missed an open goal from inside the 6, which would've tied the game at 1, VT conceded in scrappy fashion to go down 2-0 and that was the killer blow. They never looked like getting back in the match, but held their own against the defending national champions. Santa Clara's goal in the first half was dubious and had hints of offside -- it almost looked like the back line stopped playing in the buildup.
Emily Gray was not at her best today -- had quite a few decent chances but her shots were weak and passing was wasteful.
Ava Veith (starting left back) did not play today and that showed. She is one of VT's best players and without her VT really doesn't have much width and she is an excellent crosser of the ball.
VT had plenty of possession, but this team has no pace in key areas. They also don't have much of a plan B -- Allie George shows potential, but if that's the best you can bring on when trailing a match, that's not enough.
Anxious to watch them again in person this week against Villanova, and I'll be in Columbia for their game against South Carolina next Sunday.
