Things that go bump in the night.


OK, fans of the weird - let's hear from you.

Long after we got home last night and had outed both dogs for pre-slumber pee time (we go out with them to make sure they go), we were upstairs watching TV in bed and a "thump" sounded. Not sharp or loud, just a dull thump. We both said it sounded like something had hit the back side of our house. The dogs' ears perked up and stared to the windows.

I got up and checked around the upstairs to see if anything fell off the walls or fell over, then went downstairs and checked there, too. Nada.

I walked around out front and nada again. Flipped the outside back lights on and went out on the patio. On the ground next to our mint garden was the severed head of a young possum. Torn-off looking and made even more grisly by that narrow-eyed possum "grin".

If it had been there when we outed the pups we'd have seen it and obviously they would have, too. It was in plain sight only a few feet off the patio. And none of the rest of the possum in sight.

I've read today that owls who hunt at night might have done this, and while there's no visible mark on the back of the house above where the head lay - like it had been dropped in flight and bounced off the back siding and into our yard - that's not an unreasonable conclusion. But the possum and the thump may be totally unrelated.
